Material that was collected on August 7, 2022 and grown out by Andrew Dean (these photos from garden plant) @andrewdean, I think with leaf width ~3.9-4.0 mm this has to be Carex communis, even though I still think it's an oddball.MFO does state "annoyingly variable" and "probably a species complex".
~200 plants on hilltop in Dry-Fresh Sugar Maple forest.
Margins of perigynia with rounded edge and achene nearly filling perigynium body to put this into Sect. Glareosae and not Sect. Phaestoglochin.
A few clumps on root flare rise at edge of maple swamp.
A few hundred plants at roadside pull-off on hill crest. Lemmas less than 2mm in length. Small amount of (late) live material found among mostly dead plants.
