Krummholz hemlock on open shrub barrens (Duncan's Cove nature reserve, Duncan's cove side); hemlock is unusual in this context; coastal barrens krumholz trees around Halifax are usually spruce or tamarack.
A “naturally” occurring sapling seeded in from a row of old planted trees close by. The cone photo is from the planted trees, for reference. Note the long needles that radiate around the stem. Lots of odd conifers planted in this area, which was reportedly a nursery many decades ago.
Beautiful little orchid. My friend Shifty told me they're common along the AT. Go fig.
