This beautiful camouflaged crab was near the high tide line in the morning. It doesn't resemble any of the currently observed crab species in Southern California, though it reminds me of Ghost Crabs I've seen in Central America.
I took a lot of photos of it, this post includes as many angles as possible. Caught and released. Upon release it fled under my shoe and then crawled up onto my sandy sock. Photos 12-13 show a measurement in centimeters. Photo 17 illustrates its ability to blend in with the sand.
