Sapling - about 4 ft. tall.
There were lots of seedlings and saplings in this area - perhaps 20-30 in all - growing under some mature oaks.
Note: For the California OakWatch Project, seedlings are oaks that are less than about knee high, while saplings are less than about shoulder or head height.

Description
I counted at least 12 Fire Poppies coming down the Marks Canyon Trail this afternoon. The trail is along a dry, gravelly, seasonal stream in area that was heavily burned in August 2020 River Fire.
Fire Poppy (Papaver californicum) Small, native, fire-following poppy. Stems have long, sparse, white hairs. Flower petals are pale orange and look like crinkly tissue paper. Diameter of flower is no more than 2cm (less than .75"). Thick, green protruding stigma and yellow anthers. Peak bloom time: April-May.
