That time Oklahoma's State Bird showed up at the mouth of the Upper Truckee for a couple of hours. Such a surprisingly challenging bird to photograph!

a dozen sandpipers moving around, at a long distance away. I think these two are the same bird. Others in the group were mostly Least and a Western Sandpiper.

I first glimpsed it scurrying behind a log, initially thought ground squirrel due to size but the tail looked unusual. Luckily it came back out and I realized it was a weasel, which was very exciting as this is my first sighting! It scoped us out for a few seconds and I was able to grab these shots before it disappeared.

It perched far away on the top of the willows so with heat shimmer the photos are not great. Could hear it singing "fitz-beyew." Also observed it quickly flying away from the branch and then back to the same or nearby branch.

Long distance photo. It could have been seen from land at Eagle Point at the time we took photos (from a boat). But it dove and we could not re-find it for the next 30 to 40 minutes. May have moved a bit further north or further out in the lake?

Pin is where the bird was hanging out in a willow. We were standing at a distance watching it, on the trail at the overlook of the "lagoon area" halfway down to the lake from the trailhead

Regardless, this is the Tahoe basin's only record for the species to date.

Posted on behalf of Geoff Quine. Surely the same animal seen on the 5th (see Associated Observation). We spent many hours scouring the area for scat of fur for genetic testing, but no luck. Tons of coyote tracks in the area, and one came by the camera a few times this very night.
