I’m stumped by this. Leaves seem too large for Spirea. Alternate not opposite which rules out viburnums and mock oranges. Do you know @katy_swiere? I was with you at Piney Branch.

Rock Creek Park, Washington DC. I've intentionally enlarged the circle to obscure the exact location—this is the only hepatica plant I've found in the park.

Description
This is in winter so there are no leaves. The leaf nodes are distinctive. This dark green vine was tightly wrapped around several tree trunks, digging into the trunk and creating grooves where the vine was girdling the tree. A young Chocolate vine is our best guess at what this is, after ruling out all the other typical and familiar invasive vines.
