Burrowing into stargazer lily stem
In the Sensory Garden at LNC. I think on ironwood. Any ideas? Ironweed borer?
Specimen collected by Jim Vargo
Habitat: Moist depression in hardwood with the understory dominated by Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris). One of two in light trap - the other being: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/61878562. Both vouchered.
To my untrained eye, very much like Papaipema pterisii. I'm wondering if these are candidates for Ostrich Fern Borer, Papaipema sp. 2. nr. pterisii.

I note that this taxon is not recognized in the recent Annotated checklist of the moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) of Canada and Alaska (Pohl et al., 2018).
Thoughts @neoarctia?
