Description
St Lawrence Island, Gambell .
We think this is a rib bone . It’s old and has been exposed to elements so it doesnt seem as heavy and dense as my Stellers Sea cow rib artifaft. But the size and shape are correct for a Sea Cow. Much too small for any of the whales unless they took a baby. I'm not sure it matches the rib shape of any other sea mammals. Much too big for a Walrus or Sea Lion.

The only record of anything from this family in ARCTOS is one Palonica pyramidata from Beaver Creek. If I even have the correct family this would be the first iNat record for Alaska.
It was on the siding of my house, so I have no plant association for it.
Length measured at 10 mm.

I decided to use this as the lead photo as it seemed to appropriately reflect how the Upland Sandpiper has adapted to humans. This one was hardly bothered by the close proximity of a jet taking off. It landed back on the runway edge where it had been feeding.

ID for the midge. Ovipositing on fireweed buds. Also pictured is a parasitic wasp, likely Platygastrinae, ovipositing as well. Nature's checks and balances. I observed the midge ovipositing on many of the flower buds. Wasps kept flying in and visiting the buds she went to but were extra concentrated on this one bud. Lots of wasps were hanging out on the underside of the leaves. Visited the next day and saw several more of the same species of wasp visiting this exact bud, but no midges were present. Edit: 06/29/2024 this is the only flower bud to have developed a gall.

Not too much to go on but I'm thinking the prey the Black-legged Kittiwake is dining on is an arctic lamprey. Corrections welcome.
