Didn't expect to be startled by one of these in April. I've never seen one in PA. Wish photo was better quality.

Description
Observed possible egg laying adult on Urtica dioica at https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/92009304 so checked plant a little later. This is barely visible at all with naked eye (definitely smaller than a monarch egg) but photo with zoom lens seems to confirm its identity. Photo #3 shows the sticky "tether" that was present when I first saw the egg and seems to be a sign that it was freshly laid? But I probably broke it by mauling the leaf trying to get a focused photo.

This bird caused some confusion with its coloration. Possibly a melanistic morph?
