There's a wide, mowed trail that runs through the trees along the back of the pond at Alexandria Community Park. Catalpa trees are relatively common in the area, and the huge leaves make them obvious even though they're not blooming yet. They are our only local tree with whorled leaves, which is particularly attractive when the leaves are young and cute like this.
Annual herb up to 30 cm tall, unbranched or branching near base. Stems glabrous to glabrescent. Leaves linear-lanceolate, up to 10 x 1-2 mm. Spathes c. 12 mm long. Claw petals c. 7-8 mm long.
Growing in grassland to open wooded grassland in Kalahari Sands.
