skink under wooden disc
This skink was found during the day under debris near the entrance to Waitamo Cave, south of Hamilton in northern New Zealand.
A skink I rescued from one of our neighbours' cats in our garden. By the look of its regrown tail, this isn't the first close call its had.
Skink seen basking in patch of sunlight on forest floor. This is the first skink I've seen in this forest in the 6 years I've been working here, though we did have one leave footprints in a tracking tunnel 2-3 years ago
Found on rocks by the roadside.
One of several similar skinks on a (sunny) north facing rock wall. about 10cm long
Under some treated half-round sleepers which were lying on bark chips in a young native garden in the afternoon sun.
While lots of skinks were out sunbathing later in the afternoon, just this one keen individual was out on this cool morning.
Pleased to find our first skink here today while planting out a new area. Next job will be to build some retreats for them.
I disturbed two skinks (one full size and one small) from a loose crack in a rock. They were both initially pretty sluggish. I stacked in the loose rocks to make a new refuge for them around where they took shelter.

Locally common above the Mangaturuturu Stream headwaters at 1900 m a.s.l. on Mt Ruapehu. Identification made by Rod Hitchmough - apparently part of an unnamed alpine North Island component in this complex - and at this site reaching both its altitudinal and northern limit
We came across this recently deceased skink on the footpath while out walking today. It is in a semi rural setting with paddocks etc around. Approximate location.
rocky area beyond northern end of the Conservation area
Fairly large as skinks go.
