Terrepene carolina triunguis. Male, based on the eye color, plastron concavity, and large/thick tail. He was crossing a suburban road. I moved him out of the road to prevent him from becoming highway hash!

Elizabeth and I walked around Shollenberger Park in Petaluma (before the fabric stores opened up!). This is a great park for birding -- lots of neat things we saw.
