Killed by a window strike, unfortunately. I took a number of photos that I hope will highlight some characteristics that distinguish Hoary from Common Redpolls, notably the pale rump and lack of strong barring on the sides. The 2nd and 3rd photos show really long claws -- is this normal?
ASI Swallow project, summer of 2023! Banding and weighing some chicks.
Captured in a Sherman trap in my house, handled with gloves then released (I am trained in handling voles)
Found in a storm drain on the side of a road.
On fig tree in greenhouse. First time I've seen the red phase. Most, like this individual, lacked the 2 black spots on the side.
I’m not 100 percent but I seem to have the white hip area . Does seem to have a black throat and overall gestalt I thought was Arctic.
I probably have some better photos of the white lines on the neck which were pretty distinct.
