Locally common in montane riparian forest and shrubland
Rare in pakihi vegetation over coal measures.
I suspect names have changed.
Only saw two of these plants and they were a long distance apart.
On East Peak track edges. Dense patches with interesting juvenile foliage as shown.
I did get a glimpse of these birds (there was at least a dozen) and although it might have been wishful thinking they did seem to have slightly reddish heads.
Trackside at 14.4km from main road.
