Description

Male Photuris observed on a shady window screen; temperature 79°F. Captured in an Amac box and refrigerated for study; photographed 6/27 and measured as 14 mm before return to the world outside.

Photos show the characteristic hunched posture of Photuris, with legs much longer than the more familiar Photinus ‘Big Dipper,’ and the typical (but not certain) ‘shoulder stripes’ on many species in this genus. The outer pale edging to the wing covers (elytra) bulges outward in the middle a bit, in contrast to the parallel wing-cover shapes of Photinus. Elytral fold detail is helpfully shown in Sara Lewis, Silent Sparks, 2016.

Description

This seemed much larger than other fireflies I have seen in our area. Also, the pronota and body don't seem to be level, which seems different. iNat suggested some more specific id's but I can't narrow it down.
