Eastern Phoebe, 5/2/2020

My partner R and I walked to a small conservation area near our apartment. There is an open field area with covered benches, where we watched an Eastern Phoebe swooping around some brush and small deciduous trees near a creek. After a few moments we realized it was spending a lot of time in the covered bench nearest us, and wondered if it might have a nest there. It continued to fly, often in a sort of swooping motion, out towards the trees and creek, then back to the bench.

At first we weren’t sure what species it was, but we could tell it was an insect eater from the way it flew. We discussed whether it might be a swallow. I was not able to catch a photo for iNaturalist, but I did identify it using Cornell’s Merlin Bird ID app.
