Taxonomic Swap 60341 (Committed on 2024-09-25)

Piedmont gayfeather was originally classified as Liatris secunda by Elliott in 1823. In 2004, Ward reclassified this entity as a subspecies of L. pauciflora https://www.jstor.org/stable/3393302.
Plants of the World Online http://plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:60436516-2 treats L. secunda at varietal rank under L. pauciflora.

I'm not very familiar with this group and can't vouch for distinctness of L. secunda, but it is treated at species rank in Weakley FSUS. Maybe better to swap in the other direction. Thoughts?

I probably haven't seen enough to comment on the full range of variation of either, but they do seem like distinct entities at either end of the spectrum. I would be inclined to let both spp. stand for now (and sinking the Liatris pauciflora var. secunda name) but really I'd defer to whatever @jayhorn thought best, I get the sense that he has a better idea of any of us where one species stops and the other begins.

ok, I reversed the swap & set up taxon framework. So it is ready to commit...

I think this certainly warrants species treatment, but would also like to see @jayhorn's thoughts

A given taxonomic entity shouldn't have two "bins" on iNat. The Liatris secunda/L. pauciflora var. secunda was a frustration. Now, the matter is solved. Thank you!!

The Sabtatia bartramii/S. decandra issue vexed me sufficiently that I requested that it be taken care of about a month ago. It might be a good move to attempt to systematically reconcile such issues. More remain, and I'll compile a list. Does anyone with curatorial powers want to help me out?
